The Hindu Scriptures Rig Veda has mentioned the word “Ratna” in its first shloka (alias “mantra”). Scriptures further explain in the following shloka or mantra as
It is gem or ratna which enchants every creature on the earth and which is the best in all aspects along all matters. Among humans, the best person endowed with highest qualities are called ratna however as a compliment. The Rig Veda has been used thrice as “saptaratno” for seven gems.
According to Indian Astrological Philosophy the gems on the earth are found from five sources such as
Divine
Organic
Metamorphic
Sedimentary &
Chemical Processes.
i. Divine gems: As we hear & read about many divine gems of ancient period. Like in Mahabharata & mythological books has explained about the existence of four type of gems as
a. Chintamani b. Koustubh Mani c. Rudra Mani & d. Swamantak Mani.
There is detail of these Ranta or Gems or also called “Mani” in Matsyapurana in chapter 45 and Ratnaparikshadi-Sapta-Grantha Sangraha. We have not the where about of Chaintamani but the other three are owned by as:
Koustubh Mani is studded in the necklace of Lord Sri Hari Vishnu. Rudra Mani is by Lord Shiva and The Swamantak Mani is gifted to Lord Sri Krishana. ii. The Organic Gems: These gems are created within the body of the living creatures such as Coral, Oyster, Conches, Fishes, Snakes’ hood, in the projection of elephants’ forehead and in boar’s teeth.
iii. The Metamorphic Gems: These are mostly found from the natural sources such as under the earth, mines and quarries. These are highly enchanting in looks and efficacies. These are the gems formed by inorganic processes.
iv. Sedimentary Gems: These gems are created from the sediments from vegetations. Some of these gems are called Trinmanhi, amber, vanshalochan, vanshamani, vanshamukta etc.
v. Chemical Gems: These are created by chemical processes in the laboratory by setting & mixing the same compositions of chemicals to get the same properties. These are hence also called Imitation Gems.
In the ancient period the only five gems were considered as (diamonds, rubies, pearls, blue sepphires & emeralds) Pancharatna, the five-gem combination considered to be highly auspicious. In Ratna Parikshadhyaya, Maharishi Varahmihira had mentioned 22 gems in all.
Today’s there are more than 150 stones are in use. But Indian Gemologists has fixed 84 stones which are used as gems. KOUSTUBH GEMS focus his approach only on nine gemstones are called “Navratna” or Astrogems who effects the human world.
In Charakasamhita Maharishi Charak said “The divine therapy or Daibee Chikitsa consists of such practices as reciting and having trust in mantras, wearing medicinal talisman, wearing gems, doing welfare jobs in the offering oblation to fire,atonements, fasting, innovation of peace through religious process, offering regards and good wishes towards one’s elders keeping respectful consideration about others enjoying the pilgrims etc. This advocates the Indian Philosophy : “ Aushadhi manimantranaam , graha naksharta taarikaa Bhagya kaaley bhauvet sidhhi, aubhagyang nisphalang bhauvet”.
This means, at the time when disease starts manifestation, one should begin a therapy medicines. If that does not work, then he should apply gemology or gem therapy by wearing gems or precious stones to please the concerned planets or to apply solar energies. And even after that if the situation warrants,he should try the mantra therapy.
Now it is evident that Indian Astrology & Gemo-Astrology is the oldest philosophy, but how they helps is our prime concern.
The basic theory of Astro-Gemology is that the nine planets are linked to the nine gems and the stone of the planet governing fortune can generate fortune.

The seven primary colors of the spectrum and the two secondary colors correspond to the nine revolving planets (VIBGYOR & infra-red and ultra-violet). The nine colours are understood to be the cosmic matrix and the very essence of the nine planets and it is through these colours that the planets radiate their energy and influence. When the visible colored lights are measured infra-red exhibits the longest wave length and ultra-violet the shortest the wavelength of colored light emanating from the planets are found to match those radiating from each planet's corresponding gemstone(s).
